I wanted to be Posh Spice because my
hair was brown bobbed and she dated David
Beckham; I wanted to marry him. I
had no internet and recorded songs
on the radio to tape, daring to
pause and knock out the DJ’s droll. I sang
to S Club and thought I was the coolest
in my smiley faced top and my yingyang
friendship necklaces. You had to know the
Macarena not just for weddings but
school discos too and then every steps routine
to fit in. Slow dances with boys made me
wish again that they were David Beckham
and not greasy teens with bad curtains for
hair. They pressed themselves against you before
travelling to the next girl in leopard
print skirt. Viva forever was merely
a fantasy ; one I’d dream the whole of
the nineties, hoping my teenage self could
find her inner strength, her true girl power.

Because I was.

vision: retrospect; you in perspective of your formative years. This is not an assessment most make so soon after their formative years. Usually we have the benefit of time to mellow our opinion of ourselves. you have largely substituted opinion with details. We know very little you actually felt about this time. Sadly, we can't. it won't come out in this format.

originality:see, this is a toss-up. everybody who was anybody had no internet, recorded music that way, wished they were David Beckham or Posh Spice, so not very original at all; completely derivative. But. It's 20 years later. everyone is writing about today, and here you are doing this; very original, indeed

Technique: I've gone on about liking this particular stream elsewhere. I look for good stream of conscious, and so rarely find it (especially in my own work, but that's just because I can't write).

Impact: The more things change, the more things stay the same. I subtract half a point for impact because "Viva" needs more context to be fully effective. Still, at the very least, it proves to the kids today that they did not invent memes, they just had someone invent a cool word for the idea. smack. take that hipsters, we were hip before you. what's that? yes. I'll shut up now

Nice. I was in primary school in the 90s, not a teenager, but a lot of this still rings true for me as well (I was Baby Spice because I was blonde)!

Reach for the stars! :star:

I was posh spice beacuse I had a brown bob, then I really wanted to be sporty because she was the better singer. But then I realised she was a liverpool fan so went back to posh!

Ohmygawd....the freaking Macarena. My fifth grade teacher, who often taught us popular line dances on Fridays (yeah...Alabama, no judgey judgey), taught us that dance, too. LOL Nostalgia has tracked me down and I blame youuuuu. ;)

Haha that's brilliant. Even more brilliant is the fact you had line dance classes!

I would use a different word for it. ;) I did like that teacher, though. LOL She was a trip.
We also had a prom in the 4th grade and were taught how to slow dance. The South is a damn funny place.

I was a child, not a teen, of the 90's... but there's still a fair bit of nostalgia in this for me. I guess because I knew teenagers from church and such, and watched all the TV shows and all. This is really well done. You really captured the decade and what I'm sure were the thoughts of a lot of 90's teens

I love how everyone is denying their age here :p I wasn't a teen in 1990 but was 16 by 2000- therefore teenage years in the 90s when this stuff matters.

Perhaps I should have included some more TV references actually :)

my dear, I haven't seen stream of conscious, that is, good stream of conscious, since the late 90's.

Thank you ever so much for sharing. when I have tried it in recent years, I find I explode in an intellectual diatribe against whatever happens to be irritating me at the moment, but you have convinced me I need to try again.

If I can make time, I will critique when I'm at home, not doing a poor job for a rich man.

Thank you- its one of those where I just kind of "let go" and didn't worry too much about it sounding too prosaic!

that is exactly how, it feels like a "mid-brain" thing. writing pure memory as attention jumps around. But I've lost the filter that keeps the front of my conscious mind from intruding. I've tried watching fire burn to distract it (and certain types of music), and it comes close. Springtime has always good to me; I wonder if cherry blossoms will do it. I will have to find some. actually, I only need one or 2 blossoms to see if it works.

hang on to it; exercise it.

When you say 'steps routine' are you referring to the group? If so then shouldn't it be a capital?

....so tell me whatcha want, whatcha really, really want....

Not that you're that much older than me, but still. :P

You're not that much younger than me lol! I was only 6 in 1990, but 16 in 2000 so it covered that 12-15 years where those kind of things are important in life :p
