Literature Text

I wanted to be Posh Spice because my
hair was brown bobbed and she dated David
Beckham; I wanted to marry him. I
had no internet and recorded songs
on the radio to tape, daring to
pause and knock out the DJ’s droll. I sang
to S Club and thought I was the coolest
in my smiley faced top and my yingyang
friendship necklaces. You had to know the
Macarena not just for weddings but
school discos too and then every steps routine
to fit in. Slow dances with boys made me
wish again that they were David Beckham
and not greasy teens with bad curtains for
hair. They pressed themselves against you before
travelling to the next girl in leopard
print skirt. Viva forever was merely
a fantasy ; one I’d dream the whole of
the nineties, hoping my teenage self could
find her inner strength, her true girl power.

Because I was.

vision: retrospect; you in perspective of your formative years. This is not an assessment most make so soon after their formative years. Usually we have the benefit of time to mellow our opinion of ourselves. you have largely substituted opinion with details. We know very little you actually felt about this time. Sadly, we can't. it won't come out in this format.

originality:see, this is a toss-up. everybody who was anybody had no internet, recorded music that way, wished they were David Beckham or Posh Spice, so not very original at all; completely derivative. But. It's 20 years later. everyone is writing about today, and here you are doing this; very original, indeed

Technique: I've gone on about liking this particular stream elsewhere. I look for good stream of conscious, and so rarely find it (especially in my own work, but that's just because I can't write).

Impact: The more things change, the more things stay the same. I subtract half a point for impact because "Viva" needs more context to be fully effective. Still, at the very least, it proves to the kids today that they did not invent memes, they just had someone invent a cool word for the idea. smack. take that hipsters, we were hip before you. what's that? yes. I'll shut up now
