Network Yourself! #3: Ask Me Anything

Sun Jul 16, 2017, 1:59 PM

Greetings all!

Fancy a bit of fun networking?

tumblr ljb58a0j9Y1qixleeo1 500 by BeccaJS

As part of one of CRLiterature 's core objectives, throughout this year we have produced this small series of networking journals, mostly to help you find like-minded people in the community, new watchers and new opportunities! This journal is not so different, it's just another opportunity :)

There isn't much hard work involved in this; what you put in you get out of it. We are asking you to make sure you contribute- both my starting your own line of conversation and by answering others. Simple right?

tumblr maesmmBTa41rt2432 by BeccaJS

So what are we asking you to do?

1. Introduce yourself
2. Share a little bit about you- what are you into, why you're on dA etc. (No essays please!)
3. Ask the question "Ask me anything" (if you want to be more specific i.e. "ask me anything about unicorns" then do")
4. Ask other people questions and answer yours!

The more you get involved yourself, the more fun this will be for everyone!

Enjoy!

Hi there,

I'm GM. I've always loved writing, ever since my childhood. I used to write loads of fanfiction in my younger years. Today I am working on my novel and manga projects that I'm trying to get published. I occasionally write fanfictions. Recently, I had finished the game LEGEND OF ZELDA; BREATH OF THE WILD and I was so inspired by this game that I wrote a fanfiction (that got quite popular on Fanfiction.net and Tumblr to my surprise.)

That's pretty much it about it.

Ask me anything!

Hello everyone, I'm Bree!

I've been on DA for six years now. I originally started in the Traditional Art Community, but drifted over to the Lit community where I'm kinda comfy. I enjoy writing prose, more specifically sci-fi and supernatural, although I do also write quite a bit of slice of life. I'm trying to teach myself poetry as well.

Whenever I'm not on DA or writing, I'm either working at a science museum, or studying Biological Anthropology/Archaeology/Ancient History/English Literature at University.

What are your favorite themes in science fiction to write about?

Oh, that's a tough one.

War seems to be a recurring theme throughout my works, and in particular the impact is has on people. I'm a very character inspired writer; I find people, and their emotions and motivations far more interesting. I guess war (or any large scale conflict) makes character-based works easier. Idk.

Almost paradoxically though, I do like playing with positive-future sci-fi as well. I like the idea that tomorrow is kinder and prettier than today.

What about you? What are your favourite themes?

Ohhh, it's not very often I hear about positive future sci fi stories. (I got tired of dystopian novels very quickly.) There's so much you can do with that.

As for my favorite sci-fi themes... I can't say much because I certainly don't write it often enough (it's hard for me to come up with ideas anyway). Aside from superheroes (this sort of depends too), I'm slowly leaning towards touching upon extremely rare contemporary science fiction stories. It certainly isn't easy coming up with that and it's not common in the genre either.

Fair enough. Aside from the Sci-Fi genre; what other genres do you write? Do you have a favourite?

A favorite genre.... Eh, it's kinda tricky because I write all over the place. I'm not very consistent. XD

But I like writing myth.

Hi I'm DBC Late to the Party as always.  I've been a Lit CV for a year now. I write historical fiction and non fiction and secretly where the rest of you can't see me I write sci-fi and high fantasy. I've been published in a few literary magazines, otherwise I'm a part time archaeologist and linguistics consultant on the side.

Ask me anything. About anything. If I don't know the answer I'll just tell you something absurd.

Usually any time between 1917 and 1939. I started out doing a lot of first world war stuff because I took up an interest in it. But I also am starting a few spanish civil war related projects because I live in Spain. Oh, and I have a thing about the 70s going on because I have a primary source who was in the navy at that time and his stories are hilarious.

i don't say much about it on DA or post it only because that can count as first publication rights. I generally ship that stuff to magazines because getting historical fiction published is hard, the market is very small.

most of my sci fi is like... road to dystopia cautionary tales. and the high fantasy is steeped heavily in all my historical fiction reading. there's generally magic or some kind of element like that but I do a lot of crafting worlds that are plausible and stick to certain historical progressions (like, what if the Roman empire hadn't fallen... only it's something that represents the Roman empire in a fantasy world, and I try to explore what factors would have lead to such an analgous realm continuing on instead of collapsing, etc).

also doughboy is slang for an american army footsoldier from in and around the mexican american and first world wars. cafe is a cafe, because i wrote a book once about the american expeditionary forces in france in 1917 and they had a cafe they kept coming back to over and over.

Hello! I'm Mark and I'm a fantasy/Sci-fi novelist. I also write poems (took a 100 poem challenge that I'm almost finished with) and I love exploring and being around nature.  Oh and I'm an Aquarian, so my head is always up in the clouds, dreaming of stories and what not.  I came to DA originally to publish a few chapters of the new book I'm working on, to get feedback etc.  It's now evolved into a weekly submission, with an avid following of people.  Once I'm done with it, I intend to get it self published and continue on with the next book in the series.  I work as a receptionist for my day job, but I one day hope to become a full time writer, living off of my stories.

I also like to support other artists on here and get involved with the community etc.  I'm relatively new but slowly making a name for myself. :)

Ask me literally anything, I don't bite. :)

I suppose it's the escapism element that I take to when I write.  I have a very vivid imagination and drama fiction just doesn't keep me interested enough.  I love the idea of having no boundaries with my writing, and just going to someplace far away and magical.

It was oddly Jurassic Park that got me into story writing, as I used to be a big Dino fan as a kid.  I guess the book and film just showed me what was possible, if you put your mind to it.  If Michael Crichton could come up with something like that, then the world was my oyster.

It doesn't help that I'm an Aquarius as well, because I tend to daydream more often than not. This gets me in to all sorts of trouble, when I'm supposed to be paying attention to something.  I don't enjoy working an 'average' job and I long to do what I enjoy. I guess being normal just isn't for me :)

What about you?

I'm a big fan of the Skulduggery pleasant series of books, by Derek Landy.  I just love the humour he infuses into his stories, and the world is so well thought out that it just pulls me in and refuses to let go.  I mean, what's not to like about a skeleton detective that wields magic? :D What about you, what's your favourite book?

1. answered :)

2. I like to offer advice to fellow writers in need on the lit forum, I also support other artists and friends, be it feedback and promotion, or just giving them a month of core to make their profile all pretty.  I also like to get involved in challenges and competitions, that allow me to meet more people and get involved with the community. I'm a firm believer in putting something back in and helping those around me. That's how communities are born I guess. :D

My pet peeves? Good question, dearheart.

I could easily go on about how I strongly dislike poor editing. Some of these are fundamentally simple- and yet, they appear everywhere- wall of text, poor use of proper punctuation, that sort of thing. I am a stickler for keeping things simple and organized. I often say in art as in life- do not present to me a sloppy representation of yourself. On DeviantART and beyond, I want to see someone put their "best foot forward."
